Yesterday night I helped with a Service Fair at my daughter’s Elementary School. My neighbor Ashley started working together with the organization Doing Good Together, a non-profit that works to make volunteering and service, along with daily kindness, easy for every family. Their mission is to empower families to raise children who care and contribute. Ashley was the one who initiated the whole event and took over most of the work. Altogether we were a team of 5 moms that prepared and ran the event. A Family Service Fair at school offers a variety of fun hand-on project for families that benefit non-profit organizations meeting needs in the community. Yesterday you could assemble kits for homeless people that will be delivered to Downtown Streets Team, you could make cat pom-pom toys and blankets for the Humane Society of Silicon Valley and you could donate books for soldiers and DVDs for kids. Other activities were decorating your own “Giving box” that the families took home after the fair to collect things they want to donate and caring cards for kids in the Children Recovery Center Campbell. Finally you could write on a big red paper heart why you serve.
I led the activities for the Humane Society and together with three Junior High kids (one of them was my 12year old daughter) we helped the 67 families that signed up for this event to finish 38 blankets for cats and dogs and 60 pom-pom toys! Some families didn’t really seem to get the concept of “togetherness” and mostly let their kids do the projects, but I loved to watch most of the families working together as a team and really taking the time to create something nice and useful.
In between I walked over to the other classroom that was used and the big cafeteria to take some pictures and I saw many smiling faces and could hear a lot of happy chatting all around. I can say it was a fun, inspiring and rewarding event for everyone who attended and I’m really proud that I was a part of it.
