Let it go
Last week we had friends over for BBQ with their three girls. So we had a total of five girls between 5 and 11 years old. We had a moment that afternoon where we looked at each other, all thinking the same thing: “We thought the days of dealing with tantrums were left in the toddler years.” Yeah – so wrong!! When your tween begins to have a meltdown, go ahead and pick your jaw off the floor – it’s actually normal! So, as you can imagine one of the girls threw one of those tantrums for any known reason and my friend looked and my and started singing: “Let it go-o, let it go,….” I had to laugh out loud. Unfortunately we are quiet familiar with the lyrics of this well-known song from the movie “Frozen” and we kept singing it. We discovered that some of the lines of this song could work perfectly as a mantra. Some incantation for the occasionally stressed and overwhelmed mom of a moody tween or teen.
You can either just sing it in your head to calm you down and gain some strength to deal with your tween’s outburst or you could even start singing the lines out loud and wait for a reaction.
I will actually try that. I’m just a litlle afraid my 11year old will sing right back at me:
Well, I guess that’s what they have to do to become a teenager and young adult and to deal with everything that’s going on in their bodies.
What is your favorite song or a personal mantra to calm you down?
