Start something new!
A year from now you will wish you had started today.

Someone posted this quote on facebook a pretty long time ago and I instantly liked it. So I’m using it as my writing prompt for today’s post.
I love trying new things. That doesn’t mean I’m pursuing every activity I’ve ever started, but I think by trying new things you keep moving and are constantly learning. During my childhood years I tried so many different sports I can’t even remember all of them. And what did I end up doing for more than 8 years? Vaulting. You probably don’t even know what that is. Vaulting is gymnastics on horseback and in my teen years it gave me everything I wanted: An activity with friends, working together with animals and a sense of belonging. These were very happy years and I wouldn’t want to miss them in the world!
Moving to California was something completely new for me. I had to manage life in a second language and I never thought I would be able to do that. Ever since we moved here I had to do so many things for the first time and had to learn new tasks I had never faced before. And I absolutely love that I got to do that. Trying new things and mastering new skills is very uplifting and motivating. But it’s not always easy to get started. Life gets in the way and you don’t always have the mental or physical strength to motivate yourself. Sometimes it might be better to improve the things you love anyway or to master the things you have to do all the time. Like parenting – lol! That is a constant challenge itself.
But starting new things is a beautiful thing. You’ll learn new skills, meet new people and discover sides of yourself you might not have known before. Last year I started this blog and writing for an audience was a completely new experience for me. Every time before I hit the “publish” button, I was so nervous that I almost peed my pants. Not anymore. It’s good to get it out there and I always feel a mood boost when I finished a post or get a like or a comment. I’m loving it! And now I joined the NaBloPoMo, definitely something new for me. It’s a big endeavor, but the idea that I’m one of many fellow bloggers who are taking on this challenge is very motivating. I love the writing lab on facebook where people share their posts and give each other thumbs up for their work. After this post I will already have 1/10 of the challenge completed – ha! One step at a time.
For me, every post is starting something new and even though I know that my writing in English is far from perfection, it means a lot to me. I read Sean’s post yesterday and I love her last line: “…the words are there. And that in itself is meaningful.”
Start something new! Maybe today?
This post is a part of a series called NaBloPoMo 2016 hosted by BlogHer. NaBloPoMo is short for National Blog Posting Month and it challenges writers and creatives to post on their blogs once a day (at least) for the month of November. You can find all my posts on my blogher page, too. Stay tuned!
