The numbers are not looking good here in California. ICU beds are filling quickly and I’m afraid of a new stay-at-home order. I am usually pretty good at suppressing sad feelings (which keep coming up more and more lately), but...

It is September, hence Oktoberfest season! Why is Oktoberfest in September though? Oktoberfest starts in September because its final day has a fixed spot on the calendar. The last day of the festival is always on the first Sunday of...
As some of you might know, I am a contributor for “Heimat abroad”, a magazine for German-Americans and German-speaking expats in the U.S. The latest issue contains two pieces of mine. First, a portrait of the school I’m working at,...
The 5th season of Karneval is in full swing in my hometown of Cologne and other areas of the Rhineland. I miss it a lot. You don’t know Karneval? Here you can read a bit about what Karneval in Germany...
This year is almost over and I really wanted to write one last blogpost. I haven’t written a lot in the last seven months. It’s been a very busy year and I just didn’t take the time to write. I...
Today I hosted the first official Cöllefornia-Stammtisch at Ludwig’s German Table in San José. A Stammtisch = German for “regulars’ table”, is an informal group meeting held on a regular basis. It is not a structured meeting, but rather a...
It is about time to write again. My last post was end of May and even though I wrote a few articles for Heimat Abroad, I didn’t write anything just for myself. I’ve missed blogging, but life was very busy here,...

Last week I met Nicole Jacobi for coffee. She is one of the co-owners of Ludwig’s German Table. Nicole is from Northern Germany and came to the Bay Area 16 years ago. This is Nicole’s story of how she opened one...
This is Interview No. 5 in my series of Repatriation Interviews. Last year, I had the pleasure of meeting Paalke aka Paula Dittrich on Instagram. We followed each others accounts and back then, she was still living in Kansas City....

it is to go on when

I’m Kathrin, a German who’s been living the last 16 years in the crazy world of the Silicon Valley. Even though I love our life in California, I’m still missing Köln (Cologne) and the German lifestyle. On this blog I share some of my stories and ruminate about what home really means. I’m a mother of two girls and the wife of an iSlave, a teacher, a social introvert and very passionate about the things I do.
I’m glad you’re here! Schön, dass du hier bist!
