Walking is good for you
I wouldn’t say that hiking is one of my passions, but I always enjoy a good long walk, preferably with friends, in a beautiful place of which we have lots here in California. I find that it’s easier to talk while you walk. Walking is good for you in many ways. It is a low-cardio exercise, gives you energy because it increases the oxygen supply to every cell in your body and you get a good dose of vitamin D. Walking makes you happy, too. I try to go for a walk at least once a week and I want to start sharing my rambles here.
Fort Funston – A good place to bring dogs
Last weekend my family and I went up to the city to meet friends who we haven’t seen in a while. Their two “kids” are German Shorthaired Pointers. A girl and a boy who need a lot of exercise. So we drove to Fort Funston, just south of Ocean Beach. It was actually a rainy day, but we were fortunate to stay dry at the beach forabout 2 hours. Well, dry from the top, our feet got quite wet a few times. It is a beautiful beach. The weather made it look kind of mysterious and infinite. The dogs ran up and down the beach like crazy. They had just the best time.
And we had a good talk. Our friend told us about Fort Funston. It was formerly known as the Lake Merced Military Reservation, was renamed in honor of Frederick N. Funston (1865–1917), a General in the United States Army, and was later a Nike missile launch site during the Cold War. The fort was inactivated in 1963 and is now a protected area within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The area is covered with trails for hiking and horseback riding. It is a popular dog park and the only park in the GGNRA that allows off-leash dogs. The strong, steady winds make the cliffs overlooking the beach a popular site for hang-gliding.
Good times
We also talked about work, kids, skiing together, the Warriors and life in general. My daughter had the best time throwing the ball for the dogs and my husband tenaciously kept his shoes on without getting them wet. I enjoyed the talk, the views, the air and being in San Francisco. So here I have two more goals for 2016. Going for a weekly hike with people I enjoy spending time with and going up to the city more often. Amen!
