Participating in the NaBloPoMo I knew this day was coming: Election Day in the USA. My blog is not political and on my list of planned blogposts for the month I had written down a different topic for today. But now this day is here and it is 3.15 pm PST. The first results from the East coast are expected soon. People share on facebook that they have voted and post pictures with their “I voted” sticker.
I still remember the Election Day in 2008. We just moved to California and spent the evening with a couple German families. Almost everyone we knew and people we just met were excited about the possibility of the first black president. “Hope” and “Change” were the keywords in the first Obama campaign, running against John McCain.
“Yes we can” was all over the media.
Today, on November, 8th 2016 most people seem to wonder:
“How could we?”
Get here? These two are my options?
I didn’t feel a lot of excitement. People seemed disappointed that the “nasty woman” and “Amnesty Don” are their only options. Not much of a choice. “That’s how many voters feel about this year’s presidential candidates. Only about four in 10 voters said they would be excited or optimistic about either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump in the White House next year, according to early exit polls.” Many Americans said they would have to choose between the lesser of two evils.
I feel the same way. I would never vote for Donald Trump, this imbecile, rude and inscrutable reality TV show guy. My fellow Germans are very nervous about the outcome of this election. The media covers results all night long. My friends tell me that the majority of Germans despise Trump. They call him “the horror clown”. Europeans can not comprehend how this man could be accepted as a presidential candidate. They think that the Trump represents the dulling of the Americans. On the other hand the Germans are not sure about what will happen if Hilary becomes president.
And unfortunately I’m not super excited about her either. I’m skeptical about her foreign politics. The only thing I am excited about is, that she is the woman who worked her ass off for her country for a long time. She fought for children with disabilities, underprivileged families and stood up for LGBT rights. And even though I’m not an American and I cannot vote today, these would be my personal reasons to vote for Hilary. I’m with you, sister. May the better woman win! And I like the idea of her and Angela Merkel ruling this fucking man’s world. It should not be a man’s world anymore.
That’s why I’m gonna wear a pantsuit tonight. I’m going to an “Election Happy Hour” now and everyone is wearing a pantsuit. “Pantsuit Nation” has become movement in the last weeks and there is even a “secret” facebook hub.
Cheers, America! To your first female president. Let’s make some history tonight!
This post is a part of a series called NaBloPoMo 2016 hosted by BlogHer. NaBloPoMo is short for National Blog Posting Month and it challenges writers and creatives to post on their blogs once a day (at least) for the month of November. You can find all my posts on my blogher page, too. Stay tuned!
