After my post about the things I love about my life here, the opposite blogpost is now in order.
You can’t get a decent “Brötchen”. Not even in a German bakery. No one here seems to have a clue how to bake a tasty “Schrippe”, “Rundstück”, “Wecke”.
Traffic sucks. Americans don’t drive, they operate cars and after taking the driving test at the DMV in 2008 I know why. Driving on an American freeway sometimes scares the shit out of me. So many people don’t seem to know any traffic rules. Even though there are signs every 10 miles that the slower traffic should stay on the right, no one cares. They drive in any given lane at any speed they wish. Traffic here in the Bay Area is terrible and becomes even more horrifying during rush hour. People rather commute 30-40 minutes for 10k instead of riding their bikes or taking the train.
The American love of guns and this stupid second amendment. The relationship with firearms in this country makes me feel very concerned. Because the sad truth is that it is much more likely to get killed by a gunshot in this country than in any other place in the world.
In Germany, for example, about two out of every million people are fatally shot by another person each year.
About 31,000 people in average per year get killed by a gun in the US and there have been more than 1,000 mass shootings since 2013. I second everything that Jim Jeffries, an Australian comedian has to say about that topic.
The American measurement system sucks. The rest of the world (well, almost) is using the metric system which is so much more useful and practical. But the Americans still have their own messed up units of measurement called inches (2.54 cm), yard (0.914 m), ounce (28.35 g), or gallon (3.79 liter). Congress passed the Metric Conversion Act of 1975 “to coordinate and plan the increasing use of the metric system in the United States”, but the SI (International System of Units) is still not mandated and this makes the US one of only three countries as of 2007, with Myanmar and Liberia, that have not adopted, or are not in the process of adopting, the metric system as their official system of weights and measures.
It’s called football, not soccer!!! They call their game football, even though the only two players that use their feet, besides for the running I admit, are the punter and the kicker.
Nonstop optimism and friendliness are common practice. Everything is awesome and everyone feels great. All the time. That is exhausting to many others. Can’t they just accept the fact that some things suck and always will? Like doing your taxes or cleaning the toilet.
Politics, the presidential campaign in particular. This ReqUires no More exPlanation.
This post is a part of a series called NaBloPoMo 2016 hosted by BlogHer.
