Repatriation means the return of someone to their own country. As part of my series “Repatriate Interviews” I talked to Tina Busch, a German writer, translator and mother of two. After living the expat life in the US for several years, she her family moved back to Germany last year. Now the time of repatriation […]
I can’t believe it’s already September, the ninth month of the year! So here’s my September Link Love. Teaching and parenting First of all I want to share some link love with my new employer, the German International School of Silicon Valley. On Tuesday I started to work there as a part-time substitute teacher for […]
Places in California, and things This is a new post in my series “My A to Z of California”. It seems now I finished this post, that everything important in California starts with an S. San Jose The first one of the list of places in California with a S has to be the city […]
The last day…. of Barack Obama’s presidency is today. I’m so sad. This country has become my second home and even though I don’t love everything about the US (neither do I about Germany), this president and his family has become a part of my home here and my heart.
Apparently this week of NaBloPoMo will be the “repatriating week” for me. You might have noticed that this topic has been on my mind for a while now. In the summer I created a survey for some people I know that have moved back to Germany or Switzerland to learn more about their experiences, feelings […]
After my post about the things I love about my life here, the opposite blogpost is now in order. You can’t get a decent “Brötchen”. Not even in a German bakery. No one here seems to have a clue how to bake a tasty “Schrippe”, “Rundstück”, “Wecke”. Traffic sucks. Americans don’t drive, they operate cars and […]
What is great about the US? 7 things that a German expat in California loves about living in this country. #americanlife
Germans and Americans are different, just as Chinese and Argentinians or Indians and Mozambicans. As a German expat living in the US I’m always interested in cultural differences between our two nations. I already wrote about it in my post “pineapple vs. coconut”. These differences can affect communication in business or social environments like the German honesty […]
Every time you go on facebook lately you will find at least one post that features a list about something you don’t really need to know, most of the times not even particularly interesting, but you gonna read it anyway. Because it’s fun, it’s diverting, it’s distracting and sometimes even news. You can learn insignificant […]
Words of the day
Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risk, breaking rules, making mistakes and having fun.

I’m Kathrin, a German who’s been living the last 9 years in the crazy world of Silicon Valley. Even though I love our life in California, I’m still missing Köln (Cologne) and the German lifestyle a lot. On this blog I share some of my stories and ruminate about what home really means. I’m a mother of two girls and the wife of an iSlave, a teacher, a social introvert and very passionate about the things I do.
I’m glad you’re here! Schön, dass du hier bist!
