My weekly ramble #29 If you read my post Q is for… (weekly ramble #26) you know that this was my second attempt to hike up Mount Umunhum. This time we found a parking spot and successfully hiked the 8.2. mile loop up and back down the legendary summit. It was perfect hiking […]

Ex-repatriate: Moving back and forth. This time I talked to Susanne, ex-repatriate, a German who lives in California for the second time in her life. My interview with Susanne is the third one in my series of repatriate interviews. Here you can read #1 with Cordula and #2 with Simone.
A few weeks ago I founded a Meet Up group for Expat women in the Silicon Valley. To host this kind of group has been on my To Do list for quite some time and I finally I got around doing it. Meet Up is a website that brings people together in thousands of cities […]
Campbell downtown Publishing a post every day got a bit challenging this weekend. It’s hard to take the time to post something good when you’re planning and celebrating your birthday party. My post from yesterday was a bit blah. Happy birthday to me! We had a wonderful night with close friends, champagne and cake at midnight and […]
Anne & Mark’s Art Party 2016 Yesterday my husband and I went to the Opening Gala of this incredible event here in San Jose. It was the first time we went and I’m so happy we did. In this valley we live in – renowned for its creativity – it’s not always easy to find […]
You can find them all over town now. They bring an explosion of color and whimsy to the streets of Silicon Valley and smiles to the people passing by. Common grey traffic utility boxes that are turned into art pieces. They are always standing at intersections and every one has its own style. Over the […]
I don’t even know what the title of this blogpost is gonna be yet, but I feel I have to write my thoughts down this morning to get some clarity. Sometimes, living in the Silicon Valley really sucks for me. I’m woman, a wife, a mother, and like many of us, I struggle with focusing […]
Today I’m on a little trip to home. Which is kind of ironic, because exactly 8 years ago today, we arrived at SFO and started our new life in California. This morning we left the house at 7.05am (yawn) and my 12year old daughter, who is doing a “shadow day” at the German International School […]
May is National Bike Month. In the Bay Area cycling has been growing constantly over the last years. When we moved here in 2009 it was just the “new Golf”. Only middle-aged men with money seemed to ride around with their super expensive Cervelos and Spezialized bikes. Now you actually start seeing “normal people” on average bikes, sometimes […]
Words of the day
Tell me, what you will do with your one wild and precious life?
— Mary Oliver
I’m Kathrin, a German who’s been living the last 9 years in the crazy world of Silicon Valley. Even though I love our life in California, I’m still missing Köln (Cologne) and the German lifestyle a lot. On this blog I share some of my stories and ruminate about what home really means. I’m a mother of two girls and the wife of an iSlave, a teacher, a social introvert and very passionate about the things I do.
I’m glad you’re here! Schön, dass du hier bist!
