My weekly ramble No. 30 Finally I get to share more of my happy place with you. Hopfen am See (Hopfen-by-the-lake) is a little lakeside village that belongs to Füssen. It’s located in the state of Bavaria and the Southeast of the Allgäu. Most people probably know Neuschwanstein, the castle that served as a model for the […]
My first link love post of 2018 – yay! Did you make New Year’s resolutions? Usually we do, but this year we didn’t. Oh well, usually I’m also sharing these links on the second Friday of the month in a Friday Link Love, but I was busy hosting a birthday party for a teenager yesterday. […]
Three Word Thursday #27 Today I’m linking up again with Amanda from Running with Spoons. Hop over and check out other random thoughts on this Thursday. 1 Happy New Year everyone! I can’t believe it’s already day 11 of 2018 and I’m back in California. I did not write down New Year’s resolutions, […]
Dear followers and friends! It’s already the third day of the new year and I haven’t blogged for a while now. We spent the last two and a half weeks in Germany and it’s been a busy time as always. Visiting home is wonderful and fun, but at times slightly too busy. Trying to see everyone […]
Repatriation means the return of someone to their own country. As part of my series “Repatriate Interviews” I talked to Tina Busch, a German writer, translator and mother of two. After living the expat life in the US for several years, she her family moved back to Germany last year. Now the time of repatriation […]
Just a random post because it is National Bratwurst Day. Yes, that’s right. I wouldn’t have known, but Huffington Post keeps me posted about important stuff like that 😉 Celebrate National Bratwurst Day. I’ve actually planned pasta for the family’s dinner, but I will definitely grill these sausages from Costco tonight too.
Bake a bread! You know what every German replies when asked “What do you miss about Germany?” “The bread!” (and probably “Brötchen”, too) That’s why I want to share my favorite bread recipe with you. It’s super easy, delicious and it comes pretty close to a good German “Körnerbrot” (whole grain or seed bread). The […]
Can you believe that we are already in the second quarter of 2017? Time flies and I realized that I missed to blog about the “Best of February”. It’s seems so long ago already, but I just sum it up in one sentence: The Highlights of my February were my first two Meetup events, visiting Berlin […]
Ex-repatriate: Moving back and forth. This time I talked to Susanne, ex-repatriate, a German who lives in California for the second time in her life. My interview with Susanne is the third one in my series of repatriate interviews. Here you can read #1 with Cordula and #2 with Simone.
Repatriation = moving back to your home country Today I’m posting an interview I conducted in December.I talked to Simone, a German who lived in Aptos, California for about 5 years, together with her husband and three kids. They had their third child in the US. Simone’s husband is British so their kids grow up […]
Words of the day
Cheers to a New Year and another chance for us to get it right.

I’m Kathrin, a German who’s been living the last 9 years in the crazy world of Silicon Valley. Even though I love our life in California, I’m still missing Köln (Cologne) and the German lifestyle a lot. On this blog I share some of my stories and ruminate about what home really means. I’m a mother of two girls and the wife of an iSlave, a teacher, a social introvert and very passionate about the things I do.
I’m glad you’re here! Schön, dass du hier bist!
