Yosemite Of course. This is one of the best spots, if not THE greatest place in the Golden State. You feel small and irrelevant when you enter this spectacular valley which is full of natural beauties. River and waterfalls, mountains and gorges, cliffs and meadows, so many trails for hikers and rock faces for climbing lovers.
The last day…. of Barack Obama’s presidency is today. I’m so sad. This country has become my second home and even though I don’t love everything about the US (neither do I about Germany), this president and his family has become a part of my home here and my heart.
This was my first walk in 2017. After about 10 days of rain in the Silicon Valley (which is kind of a contradiction in itself), the weekend was supposed to be sunny and dry. And it was. We drove to Aptos and parked right outside the “Seascape Beach Resort”. We walked down Summer Avenue and crossed the […]
When I hear the word ambience, I have to think of a restaurant or a bar. I’m a foodie and I love going out for dinner or just drinks. There are a lot of good restaurants and bars around here, but in my opinion they often lack ambiance. I don’t appreciate all these open kitchens, it […]
Words for 2017 Drumroll please…. This is the final post of the NaBloPoMo 2016!! The first one I participated in. Some of these days it was challenging to write a post. And I’m not pleased with every single one of my 30 posts, but who cares, I did it. I’m proud and grateful for the support from […]
This is day 23 of my first National Blog Posting Month and during these last few days it has been quite challenging for me to write a post each day. We’re on vacation and I don’t always feel like taking the time to post. I also realized that this November 2016 might have been more challenging than any […]
It was a beautiful day today and it ended with an amazing sunset. It made me realize that not only at this time of the year, but all year round we should appreciate these small moments of happiness for they are so important. Be thankful for what you have. Enjoy every sunset. Look forward to every sunrise. […]
Campbell downtown Publishing a post every day got a bit challenging this weekend. It’s hard to take the time to post something good when you’re planning and celebrating your birthday party. My post from yesterday was a bit blah. Happy birthday to me! We had a wonderful night with close friends, champagne and cake at midnight and […]
I’ve read an interesting blog post about the benefits of Expat life and I realized once more that I am not a huge fan of the term expat. It sounds a bit pretentious sometimes. For me expats often are these mid-twenties who go to Hongkong, Shanghai or Dubai, work a cool job, earn shitloads of money and […]
The capitol of my country was divided when the Berlin Wall was built in 1961. I wasn’t born yet. People of West Berlin were separated from the outside world and could only get to West Germany on the road or rail transit. People couldn’t see their friends and family anymore. People got killed when they tried to climb […]
Words of the day
Cheers to a New Year and another chance for us to get it right.

I’m Kathrin, a German who’s been living the last 9 years in the crazy world of Silicon Valley. Even though I love our life in California, I’m still missing Köln (Cologne) and the German lifestyle a lot. On this blog I share some of my stories and ruminate about what home really means. I’m a mother of two girls and the wife of an iSlave, a teacher, a social introvert and very passionate about the things I do.
I’m glad you’re here! Schön, dass du hier bist!
