This is another one of the many magical places in California. Añu Nuevo State Park, about 20 miles north of Santa Cruz, on Highway 1. The park draws visitors from around the world, especially between mid-December and end of March, when every year up to 10,000 elephant seals return to breed, give birth, and molt their […]
At the beginning of March I decided to go to Germany to visit my family. Getting a good flight deal last minute is a challenge. The cheapest option was to fly with “WOW Airlines”, a young airline based in Iceland. It was obvious that I just had to stop in Iceland for one night on the way back. […]
One of my New Years resolutions is to go through my about 40,000 images on my Macbook and delete at least 15,000 of them! Going through this photographical diary, I found a great picture for this week’s Photo Challenge “Names”. We found this place in San Juan Bautista, back in 2009, when we visited the […]
Skateboarding in Huntington Beach Today we caught one of the rare, cloudy days in Southern California, but still had a lovely time skating along Huntington Beach. All these beach communities in Orange County have their own style and satisfy all stereotypes about California. Wide, long, sandy beaches with blue lifeguard stations, lots of surfers, people on roller skates in […]
After my post from yesterday, the weekly photo challenge “magic”, I couldn’t stop thinking about my favorite island of Kauai. I went through my pictures from our trip in April and found all these shots of birds we saw:
One of the most magical places I’ve ever been. Weekly Photo Challenge: Magic
This week’s photo challenge is about very small things and I love that Cheri from WordPress got her inspiration for this week’s photo challenge from Wiesbaden, Germany. When I read the title “tiny” I instantly thought of my fellow blogger Stefanie with her awesome and unique photographs at s-w-photography. Check them out. I was actually […]
Ewoldsen Trail Julia Pfeiffer Burn State Park, Big Sur, California My husband and I were lucky to sneak away for a couple’s weekend. We went and stayed in Monterey, CA and on Saturday we drove down Highway 1. We stopped at our favorite food places, had coffee, baked goods and wine & nibbles on the way […]
If you have ever been to California, you hopefully have seen the most beautiful stretch of Highway 1 between Carmel-by-the-sea and Cambria. And if you haven’t been to the Golden State yet, make sure you won’t miss this part, because it is the most amazing coastline. Do it on a sunny day because clouds will spoil […]
Winters, CA Whenever we are on a road trip in California, I’m using Yelp to find good places to eat nearby. That’s why we stopped in Winters on our way to Lassen Volcanic National Park this summer. We came from the South on Winters Road and entered the town over the new Putah Creek bridge. We […]

Cheers to a New Year and another chance for us to get it right.

I’m Kathrin, a German who’s been living the last 9 years in the crazy world of Silicon Valley. Even though I love our life in California, I’m still missing Köln (Cologne) and the German lifestyle a lot. On this blog I share some of my stories and ruminate about what home really means. I’m a mother of two girls and the wife of an iSlave, a teacher, a social introvert and very passionate about the things I do.
I’m glad you’re here! Schön, dass du hier bist!
