My weekly ramble #29 If you read my post Q is for… (weekly ramble #26) you know that this was my second attempt to hike up Mount Umunhum. This time we found a parking spot and successfully hiked the 8.2. mile loop up and back down the legendary summit. It was perfect hiking […]
My weekly ramble #28 This morning I met up with three women from my meetup group. We went hiking in Los Gatos and had lunch at the Purple Onion Café after. Jo and her Monday walks have inspired me to end or start the week with a hike. That is why I’ve been trying to […]
My weekly ramble #27 No luck with Half Dome Yosemite National Park is one of the most beautiful places in California. It is part of my A to Z of California in “Y is for…”. And the Half Dome is probably the state’s most famous landmark. The hike up this legendary Dome is on my […]
Weekly Ramble #25 It was time for another weekly ramble. Yesterday I finally crossed off another item off my California bucket list: The hike up to Mission Peak. From my house it’s approximately a 25-minute drive to Fremont (depending on the traffic). You can start from Stanford Ave. Staging Area, The parking here is free, […]
The Hollywood Sign is a must see. Last Wednesday I fulfilled myself a long-sighted dream: My girls and I hiked up to the Hollywood Sign. To be precise, behind the Hollywood Sign. We stayed in LA for four days and after visiting Universal Studios on Tuesday, it was time for some nature and quietness. And the […]
Happy Easter! We spent a wonderful, cozy day today with an easter egg hunt, mimosas, FaceTiming the family in Germany, the first Warriors Play-off game and some favorite people. On Friday my friend and I went for a beautiful back country hike in Calero County Park, one of Santa Clara County’s most diverse regional parks. The 4,469 […]
It’s been a while since my last walk for the blog. Today was a great day to get out and explore the local trails. It was a beautiful, sunny Sunday and our family went on a wildflower hunt. I shared a couple websites in the last weeks about the best hikes in California to see wildflowers this […]
This was my first walk in 2017. After about 10 days of rain in the Silicon Valley (which is kind of a contradiction in itself), the weekend was supposed to be sunny and dry. And it was. We drove to Aptos and parked right outside the “Seascape Beach Resort”. We walked down Summer Avenue and crossed the […]
A day in Solana Beach If you are traveling in Southern California or if you are in San Diego County for another reason, Solana Beach is a great alternative to some of the busier beach towns like Encinitas or Oceanside. We stayed here for 5 days and I’d like to share a perfect day in […]
Skateboarding in Huntington Beach Today we caught one of the rare, cloudy days in Southern California, but still had a lovely time skating along Huntington Beach. All these beach communities in Orange County have their own style and satisfy all stereotypes about California. Wide, long, sandy beaches with blue lifeguard stations, lots of surfers, people on roller skates in […]

I’m Kathrin, a German who’s been living the last 9 years in the crazy world of Silicon Valley. Even though I love our life in California, I’m still missing Köln (Cologne) and the German lifestyle a lot. On this blog I share some of my stories and ruminate about what home really means. I’m a mother of two girls and the wife of an iSlave, a teacher, a social introvert and very passionate about the things I do.
I’m glad you’re here! Schön, dass du hier bist!
