I don’t even know what the title of this blogpost is gonna be yet, but I feel I have to write my thoughts down this morning to get some clarity. Sometimes, living in the Silicon Valley really sucks for me. I’m woman, a wife, a mother, and like many of us, I struggle with focusing […]
One of my favorite blogs is Liv Hambrett. She just published a book about the topic I’ve been contemplating about for the last years as well. Heimat does not really have an adequate translation in English. What does Heimat mean? Is it a place, a feeling and can you carry it within yourself? It’s gonna be exciting […]
Today I’m on a little trip to home. Which is kind of ironic, because exactly 8 years ago today, we arrived at SFO and started our new life in California. This morning we left the house at 7.05am (yawn) and my 12year old daughter, who is doing a “shadow day” at the German International School […]
Today is one of these days when I get a bit homesick because I know that many of my friends are celebrating right now and are having a good time. And that’s because tomorrow is the first day of May “Der 1. Mai” which is an official holiday in all states of Germany and it […]
For almost 8 years now I live here in the US and I’ve been experiencing so many cultural differences. The Silicon Valley must be a paradise for anthropologists. Here you can probably find every single nationality there is and study them. Naturally I observe the American and German specifics foremost. What is typical for Americans? They […]
Perusing other expat blogs today, I found the blog The American in Paris and one of its post had a link to this wonderful Ted Talk “Where is home?” from Siddhartha Pico Raghavan Iyer, known as Pico Iyer. I love Ted Talks and I should listen to them more, because you can learn so much. […]
My blog is now featured on expatsblog.com I would love and highly appreciate it if you would take a couple minutes and leave a comment on the bottom of my listing. Just click here. My position on the US listings would go up and I would probably get some more clicks worldwide. Thank you!!
I wrote about the re-entry blues about a month ago and now I’m feeling kind of blue again! Coming back from Germany is a whole different story than coming back from a fabulous vacation though, especially when you are as lucky as I am and just got to spend a week on the most beautiful island […]
Green Card Madness I’ve been living in this country for almost eight years now! I’ve had two different visas and in order to apply for those or to extend them, I visited the American Consulate in Frankfurt , Germany three times. I had to wait in line outside the consulate, I waited inside for sometimes […]
Re-entry blues is expat reality. Coming back to California after visiting Germany is always a challenge for me. No matter how long I was gone, it takes me at least a few weeks to re-adjust. The time in Germany is always characterized by many reunions and by enjoying long missed rituals and delights. I relish every moment with […]
Words of the day
Tell me, what you will do with your one wild and precious life?

I’m Kathrin, a German who’s been living the last 9 years in the crazy world of Silicon Valley. Even though I love our life in California, I’m still missing Köln (Cologne) and the German lifestyle a lot. On this blog I share some of my stories and ruminate about what home really means. I’m a mother of two girls and the wife of an iSlave, a teacher, a social introvert and very passionate about the things I do.
I’m glad you’re here! Schön, dass du hier bist!
