Saint Patrick’s Day Ok, it is a big Irish holiday, I get it, but it still makes me wonder why my 8year old learns tons about this Saint Patrick from the tiny island of Ireland but she doesn’t learn anything about German culture in school. They do not celebrate any Karneval here! Well, let me say, […]

Little free libraries While walking or running through our neighborhood, I started noticing these little cute boxes or cabinets or whatever you want to call them about half a year ago. Most of them are standing in front of private residences, a few are adjacent to an office or other kind of business. The concept […]
Today I want to honor some of the wonderful and strong women in my life. B. who often comes up with new business ideas and evolves herself constantly. She always has an ear for my troubles and stays in touch with me even though we live almost 6000 miles apart. She is the beach I go to when […]
clouds and blossoms I just wanted to share something beautiful on this plain, busy and rather cloudy Thursday. Since I’ve been back in California we had the most glorious weather for February. Temperatures up to 80 ℉ (almost 27 ℃) are pretty rare for this month, even in the Golden State. It already felt like spring and you […]
Re-entry blues is expat reality. Coming back to California after visiting Germany is always a challenge for me. No matter how long I was gone, it takes me at least a few weeks to re-adjust. The time in Germany is always characterized by many reunions and by enjoying long missed rituals and delights. I relish every moment with […]
I need to write about my adventures quicker, so they do not overtake me. Three weeks ago Karneval in Cologne (Köln) started. It’s one of the biggest events of the year in this city. It’s what I came to Germany for. Well, besides seeing my family and friends. And it is something hard to describe for […]
It was a very special walk on the Sunday a couple weeks ago. A day trip through the streets of the capitol of Sweden: Stockholm. I was on my way to Germany to see my parents and to celebrate “Karneval” in Köln. I flew to Stockholm with Norwegian Airlines from Oakland. A very affordable […]
I wouldn’t say that hiking is one of my passions, but I always enjoy a good long walk, preferably with friends, in a beautiful place of which we have lots here in California. I find that it’s easier to talk while you walk. Walking is good for you in many ways. It is a low-cardio […]
Happy New Year! It’s 2016 and time for a fresh start and more blog posts, which is one of my New Year’s resolutions. The best resolution I think posted my husband: Spend more time with people & things that make you happy and less with those which do not. We will try that together. It was […]
It is December, 1st. Yeah! The anticipation of christmas has officially begun. As a German I’m still having trouble waiting that long, because I like this time of the year so much. Living in Germany, the season for me started right after my birthday mid-November, after Sankt Martin was over and shortly before the Weihnachtsmarkt opens its […]

I’m Kathrin, a German who’s been living the last 9 years in the crazy world of Silicon Valley. Even though I love our life in California, I’m still missing Köln (Cologne) and the German lifestyle a lot. On this blog I share some of my stories and ruminate about what home really means. I’m a mother of two girls and the wife of an iSlave, a teacher, a social introvert and very passionate about the things I do.
I’m glad you’re here! Schön, dass du hier bist!
