Blogging University, Day 2 I’m participating in the WordPress Blogging University for 14 days. Today’s task is to work on my title and my tagline. Well, I’m blogging for over a year now and have a title. And I still love the name of my blog! It suits me and the blog very well. The title […]

From my front door I read the post “From my front door” last week on one of the blogs I’m following “The helpful hiker” and it totally inspired me to write a blog post about the same topic. What can you find in a 1-mile-radius of your house? Lauren herself was inspired by the April […]
I’m a German living in the Silicon Valley, Bay Area, California, US. Moving here changed my life. Living in another country comes with a lot of problems, new difficult tasks, expectations, disillusions and misconceptions. Living abroad also brings a lot of experiences, new friendships, development of your personality, language growth, job opportunities and an outsider’s perspective about […]
Today I’m on a little trip to home. Which is kind of ironic, because exactly 8 years ago today, we arrived at SFO and started our new life in California. This morning we left the house at 7.05am (yawn) and my 12year old daughter, who is doing a “shadow day” at the German International School […]
Today is one of these days when I get a bit homesick because I know that many of my friends are celebrating right now and are having a good time. And that’s because tomorrow is the first day of May “Der 1. Mai” which is an official holiday in all states of Germany and it […]
family travel blogs Ok, so traveling is one of my biggest passions. If I could afford it, I’d go on a trip every month! I am by far not a frequent flyer, but last year I flew about 36.000 miles which I realize is once around the world, yay! Even though I absolutely loved the few […]
wonderful wine tasting on wheels One of the best things about living in the Golden State is that there are so many beautiful places yet to discover. There are still so many areas I haven’t been and every time we visit a new part I leave it thinking: “I have to come back soon and […]
For almost 8 years now I live here in the US and I’ve been experiencing so many cultural differences. The Silicon Valley must be a paradise for anthropologists. Here you can probably find every single nationality there is and study them. Naturally I observe the American and German specifics foremost. What is typical for Americans? They […]
You have a good life, a job, a family and friends but something is missing? You’re a bit bored, you’re looking for a new challenge, a new purpose or just for something that is exclusively for you and gives you time for yourself? I have just the thing for you: Sign up for a race! […]
Perusing other expat blogs today, I found the blog The American in Paris and one of its post had a link to this wonderful Ted Talk “Where is home?” from Siddhartha Pico Raghavan Iyer, known as Pico Iyer. I love Ted Talks and I should listen to them more, because you can learn so much. […]
Words of the day
Tell me, what you will do with your one wild and precious life?

I’m Kathrin, a German who’s been living the last 9 years in the crazy world of Silicon Valley. Even though I love our life in California, I’m still missing Köln (Cologne) and the German lifestyle a lot. On this blog I share some of my stories and ruminate about what home really means. I’m a mother of two girls and the wife of an iSlave, a teacher, a social introvert and very passionate about the things I do.
I’m glad you’re here! Schön, dass du hier bist!
